  The Endangered Cheetah
This article tells us about the number of cheetahs in the world at a declining rate. Thus researchers at zoos and breeding centres have been constantly trying to boost the cheetah population by encouraging captive cats to breed. Thus, scientists have also come into help to help maintain the population.

Through this article, I found out that cheetahs are actually endangered and many kinds of community have come into help to preserve these magnificent beasts which are the fastest sprinters on Earth. I also found out that a captive cheetah differs from free-living cheetahs in terms of health. Captive cheetahs have poor breeding success and are more prone to diseases compared to a free-living cheetah. Researchers have also found out that free-living cheetahs are endangered primarily because their habitat is shrinking and because cheetah behaviour prevents the animals from thriving in game reserves. Also, by changing the way zoos manage the cats seems to have higher success rate of breeding. Thus, scientists are still looking into the matter and may have more ideas to prevent this species of getting extinct.

After reading this article, I’ve learnt that cheetahs are endangered and needs to be preserved so that it wouldn’t be extinct like some of the population such as Saber-Toothed Tiger, Mammoths and Dodo birds. Thus, to prevent more kinds of animals from getting extinct, scientists and researchers are doing their best to come up with solutions to preserve the species. I hope that they would find more solutions to this and prevent the extinction of such a magnificent beast. Also, I can’t wait to admire this beautiful and magnificent beast when I go to the zoo the next time.

  eat bright,eat right
From the article, i know that brightly coloured food always plays an important part in most cuisines around the world. One of the properties in the red colour of the tomato helps protect skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Eating tomatoes can also help skin to stay young even if we are out in the sun year in and year out.The luminous colour of soft fruits contains a property that stimulates the memory area of brain. This can help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, the condition of extrem forgetfulness that comes to some people, esp in old age.Drinking cranberry juice is good for our blood flow and heart. The cranberry colour contains an agent that helps reduce fats that build up in arteries and heart.Studies from US and Europe show that broccoli contains properties that heli boost the body's ability to fight off cancers. However, sometimes free radicals go wrong and become harmful. This can lead to cancer.

After reading the article ,i learnt that i have to eat more fruits and bright vegetables ,also have to be more careful about daily diets. I need to eat more tomatose and fruits ,such as kiwis ,strawberries.

A little stress may keep cells youthful

Do you know that a lot of stress can turn your hair gray, but a little stress can actually delay aging. A protein tied to protecting cells from stress also helps slow aging.
Exposure to heat, cold or heavy metals can damage proteins and unravel them from their usual conformations — trauma that can cause cell death.
But cells have a damage-limiting mechanism called the heat shock response to combat these and other stresses. As part of the heat shock response, special protein repair molecules patch up the damaged proteins and refold them correctly, preventing death and extending the life of the cell.
Scientist have found out about something new: Sirtuin 1, or SIRT1, an aging-related protein. It’s the first evidence linking SIRT1 to the protein-protecting heat shock response. Scientist have found out too that that Sirtuin 1 has many roles in longevity. It’s remarkable that it also affects heat shock response.”
One mild stress that can activate the heat-shock response is a calorie-restricted diet, which has been shown to extend the life of all species tested so far, including mice and dogs. Calorie-restricted diets increase the levels of Sirtuin 1, or SIRT1, an aging-related protein.
When a cell is under stress, heat shock factor 1 latches on to DNA and steps up production of the protein repair molecules. But the cell can’t exist in a state of emergency all the time. After the protein repair molecules become abundant, the damage-limiting mechanism shuts itself down
I have learnt that with this i should introduce some stress to myself so maybe i won't age at all. i have learnt so many things about our selves and how cells work( Done by: Nicholas)

  Why we can't imagine death?
Almost everyone has a tendency to imagine the mind continuing to exist after the death of the body. Even people who believe the mind ceases to exist at death show this type of psychological-continuity reasoning in studies. Rather than being a by-product of religion or an emotional security blanket, such beliefs stem from the very nature of our consciousness.

The brain is like any other organ: a part of our physical body. And the mind is what the brain does—it’s more a verb than it is a noun. Why do we wonder where our mind goes when the body is dead? Shouldn’t it be obvious that the mind is dead, too? The common view of death as a great mystery usually is brushed aside as an emotionally fueled desire to believe that death isn’t the end of the road.

From this article, i feel that as death isn't like anything we've experienced, we cannot imagine what it will feel like to be dead. In fact, death won’t feel like anything, when we die, what’s next is nothing. Death is a black hole, the end of experience, the permanent extinction of being.

I believe that we have seen death taken place before, like people older than us who has already deceased. Some of us actually hope that the deceased can tell us what happens during afterlife, but that is never going to happen.

I find this article interesting, and i think that if the world was very advanced and progressed, we can actually experience death before death itself with an advanced technology equipment, but who knows? For now, i'll just let the mystery be.

  Bats and Echolocation
This article is about how a bat would navigate through a place with echolocation. As we all know, people always describe a bat as blind. Therefore, we had the impression that a bat does not have the sense of sight. Furthermore, a bat is more likely known as a nocturnal mammal. True enough, a bat does not use their eyes to sense where they are going. Instead, they depend on their pair of ears. So, how do they navigate through the night when it is completely dark and the moonlight is the likeliest source of light?

Through this article, I learnt how a bat navigates itself through the night. Echolocation is actually by rushing air from your lungs past your vibrating vocal chords. These vibrations caused sound waves. The changing air pressure pushes surrounding air particles out and then pulls them back in. These particles then push and pull the particles next to them, passing on the energy and pattern of the sound. In this way, sound can travel long distances through the air. However, bats produce sound from either their mouth or nose. For most bats, the echolocation sound has an extremely high pitch (ultrasound). The sound travels through the air as a wave, and the energy of this wave bounces off any object it comes across. A bat emits a sound wave and listens carefully to the echoes that return to it. The bat's brain processes the returning information the same way we processed our shouting sound using a stopwatch and calculator. Therefore, a bat can determine where an obstacle is, the size of it and which direction is it moving to. This is how a bat navigates trough echolocation.

After reading this interesting article, I wonder if scientists or researchers could use this echolocation to help the blind. Since the bat can still navigate itself without its sense of sight, there must be some possibility that a human being could also use echolocation to navigate its ways through busy streets. I really look forward to researchers applying echolocation to a blind person’s life, so that they would not have to carry a walking stick wherever they go. If it really does happen, it would add to our noise pollution.

Special animals that live inside carnivorous plants.
This article has allowed me to know much more about these carnivorous plants. I have always thought that animals who went close to those plants would have been trapped and eaten but after reading this article, i find that some animals actually live in plants! For example, the article wrote that the yellow crab spider lives with the yellow sepals of Darlingtonia and is happy in its carnivorous home, and green lynx spiders on Sarracenia which often hides under the lid, and if frightened scurries inside the pitcher. These special animals do not get eaten by the plants, instead some of these animals feast on these poor, sad, defenseless carnivorous plants as they pull out the preys that was captured by the plants! Stealers!
Sadly the article did not mention why those animals did not get eaten by the plants.
I have always thought those plants were in a sense bad, but this interesting article just made me change my bad impression of those plants into a sad and helpless plant and starting to pity the plants.

  Taking Age Stereotypes to Heart
Have you ever impose any negative or disapproving attitudes towards the elderly? If so, it will be better to quit such habit as a recent study has proven that young and middle-aged adults who endorse negative stereotypes about older people display higher rates of strokes, heart attacks and other serious heart problems in their later life. It is proven that a larger amount of people with age stereotypes had suffered a heart ailment of stroke compared to those who rejected age stereotype.

After reading this article, I think this study can help teenagers and adults to change their way of thinking towards the elderly even if it’s by forced. Since they themselves will one day become old and will have young people who discriminate them, so why not first change your view over the elderly. They have totally forgotten about the contribution made by these elderly which impacts our daily life so much.

For myself, I don’t endorse negative stereotypes towards older people. I’d rather treat them with respect other than preventing myself against heart ailment or strokes. This article can provide a big sound-off to people the amount of young generations who discriminate the olds.

What causes depression ?

Though the exact cause of depression hasn't been determined, we do know that women experience it twice as often as men. Symptoms of depression vary from person to person - but there are common indicators of depressed feelings. Different causes require different treatments for depression. For instance, if you're depressed or have defeated feelings because of unexpressed anger, you may benefit from counseling. If your brain chemicals are wonky (a common cause of depression) then antidepressants as treatments may be helpful.

There are three main theories that seem to explain the causes of depression or the "common cold" of psychiatry (dubbed as such by Martin Seligman).

Cause of Depression: Unbearable Loss

Depression can be a reaction to a loss in your life. Death, divorce, separation are hard blows – and they can definitely cause depression. Other emotional losses can be just as traumatic: loss of hope, self-identity, faith, innocence. You can lose sight of your self-worth or self-esteem and spiral into depression. You can lose sight of your dreams, which can cause depression.

Cause of Depression: Unexpressed Anger

"Depression is anger turned inward." Causes of depression include unexpressed anger or rage. An example of this is the perennial nice guy who never has a negative comment, who never expresses his anger no matter how bad the situation is. Being easy-going is one thing; swallowing your rage is another. Not expressing yourself can cause depression.

Cause of Depression: Brain Chemicals

Noradrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine are brain chemicals that are abnormally low in depressed people. These chemicals are involved in the transition of nerve impulses in the brain – they're also known as monoamines. So, regardless of how wonderful your life is, you could struggle with depression simply because of your brain chemicals – or lack thereof. Unstable or low brain chemicals can cause depression.

Drug or alcohol abuse and hormonal disorders have also been cited as causes of depression.

Other Factors That Cause Depression:

------------------

On televisions, Newspapers, or even articles having people who have got depression.
However, it is not taken seriously, and forgotten the next .
How serious can depression be ?
We've watched numerals drama shows on depression, with people ending up committing suicide.
Not much know what is the true cause of depression, and how terrible it can get if its serious.

From this article, i have learn what are the few reliable causes of depression, and how can we prevent it to happen to us, or even our loved ones.Knowing the risks and causes of depression can help us to avoid it.

Depression is hard on the person who suffers, and it's tough on the people who love her. Knowing how to act and what to say can be difficult especially if you don't know the cause of depression. Finding a good therapist who specializes in causes of depression would be helpful.

Depression is not a disease.
Thus, we should not fret or fear of those who have got depression.
In fact, we should step forward, and lend a helping hand to the those who needs help at that very moment.

Sunshine vitamin diminishes risk of colds, flu

http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/41121/title/Sunshine_vitamin_diminishes_risk_of_colds%2C_flu

This article is about vitamin D, affecting our chances of getting colds, flu and even pneumonia. This article tells us that if we get more than enough vitamin D, it can decrease the chances of the upper respiratory system getting infected with viruses. We can get vitamin D by getting sunshine. Low level of vitamin D decreases the vulnerability against lungs diseases. A person with lung diseases, with enough vitamin D, the lungs can become as good as a person with a healthy lungs.

From this article, I learnt that we should always go outdoors and get some sunlight instead of staying indoors all day. By going outdoors, we can not only have fun but we can also keep our body fit and healthy.

White lines on your fingernails??

What are they? No, they're definately not a sign for every white lie you've made, like which most parents would have told their child.

These commonly found white markings are called Leukonychia. Leukonychia are nonuniform, which means they could appear in differing spots on one or more nails, but fret not! They does not span the nail and doesn't have any harmful effects on the body or whatsoever. In other words, they're insignificant.

Wondered what causes them? The usual explanation to most Leukonychia is nothing more than a minor trauma. It doesn't appear immediately therefore the time of the knock is hard to pin down as it could take weeks for the white line to appear. The other reason for the white lines to appear on your fingernails is the lack of zinc. Zinc, is an essential mineral that plays many roles to keep the body in a healthy functioning state, but too much of it is bad for the body too. Over intake of zinc would weakens the body's immune system.

After reading the article, i've known more about the facts behind fingernails. I understand that those white lines on my nails, Leukonychia, are not harmful and therefore need not worry. I also realised that too much of something good can have a negative effect too, so everything should be balanced up, not too less, not too much. Only then, can we get the best result.

  immjoo's 2nd article

This article tells us more about the food we eat that is causing global warming. One will think that what we eat, beef, is not affecting the earth, but actually, it does. As the article stated, before eating the beef, before the nice tasty beef is serve to us, it has gone through processes which produces carbon dioxide which is a gas that is trap in the atmosphere, and it causing global warming. According to Ulf Sonesson of the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology in Goteborg, Sweden, the process of making a one half-pound all-beef burger adds the equivalent (made up of other greenhouse gases) of about 19 times that hamburger’s weight in carbon dioxide. If we cut down on eating beef, carbon dioxide will be reduce, global warming too. Other kinds of meat like chicken and pork is less harmful to the environment, as comparing the amount of gases given out to beef. Eating vegetables is better and healthy. To grow and eat a pound of potatoes, for example, sends less than one quarter-pound of carbon dioxide or equivalent warming gases into the air.

What can we possibly do to stop this or to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being release from meat, beef?

We can eat less meat, beef, and eat more healthy choice vegetables. Not many people know about this news, so we can help with spreading this around, and telling people that eating beef is harming the earth, environment, so we should be considerate, reduce eating beef, do not eat beef at all. Eat less meat is also healthy and bring less harm to yourself. Eating more vegetables, you will feel that your life has lightened up, and you feel healthier, mentally.

Think you can be a superhero? Think again.

Every kid, boy, girl, even adults know about Batman. Batman, the most down-to-earth superheroe among every other superheroes. He was not bitten by any radio-active spiders (Spiderman) or come from a distant world (Superman). Only his wits, money, physique and years of training protect him from the evil-doers in Gotham (eg: the Joker). Why his money helps is because it lets him build his Batmobiles, Batcables and other Bat-goodies, of course. I mean, have you seen his secret hide out? Can a person like Bruce Wayne could really exist? Professor E.Paul Zeher tells us.

Basically, Bruce Wayne could really exist in our world! The most plausible of all Batman’s skills is his martial arts background and physical prowess that is required to use some of his gear. To achieve that, one just has to train to that extreme. Something less realistic would have to be him fighting so many opponents at a time as when we estimate how fast someone can punch, kick and hit one person in a second, we only end up we numbers like 5 or 6. But to have that number to attack Batman or anybody else at a time is also difficult as they will get in the why of each other! Ever heard of “too many cooks spoil the broth”? of course the training takes time, to achieve Bruce Wayne’s ability the training needs at least 10 to 12 years.

But after all that training, one could have really dense bones and gain more muscles weight. A good thing is that your reaction speed will improve, somehow like your nervous systems improving to becoming more efficient. Of course, being Batman means you will never get enough sleep since you have to fight at night and work by day. Getting beaten up every night (even when he wins), will also make him more tired and injured.

So actually, when we calculate the percentage of billionaires and multiply that by the percentage of people who become Olympics decathletes, we could get a close estimate of just how many people can be Bruce Wayne. And it’s really just how big a range of performance and ability we can tap into.

I chose this article as once again everyone can relate to Batman since everyone knows who batman is! I believe that everyone when at a phase of their life wanted to be a superhero. Although Batman is more themed as a ‘darker’ superhero, he still is a superhero after all. It has been an interesting read as I always thought that being a real comic book superhero can only be part of our imagination. Who knew that real Batmen could exist? After this read, I also realized that I could never be Batman. Regardless of the fact that he is a guy, I CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT SLEEP! Once I am deprived of sleep, I get into a really bad mood and have serious cases of mood swings. Even the slightest of the slightest of things can set me off. I think that nobody would want a superhero who has bad mood or attitude right (Hancock??!!) ? Plus the fact that batman gets beaten every time! I will not willingly let somebody hit me!! So after reading this article, I really believe that being a superhero is hard work and takes a lot of guts. Maybe there will be somebody out there in the world who possess this kind of skills, money and heroism, but that somebody is definitely not me!

Homework Blues

This article was about scientists have shown that children who feel sad or neutral performs better on the experiment as compared to the other children who were feeling happier. In the 1st experiment they have conducted, it's possible that the upbeat music had distracted the kids from finding shapes. The researchers hypothesize that feeling down makes people more aware of details, perhaps because sadness makes us more likely to focus on a problem or difficult situation.

I feel that this article might not be true to all people. For me, i dont think that having a bad mood improves the results of my work or even, tests. When i'm frustrated, i wont have the mood to focus on the subject and i'll get myself "dreaming" or thinking about the problem i'm facing which gets me more depressed. Afterall, in this article, the main focus was on young children. Young children are naive and innocent, they dont really have much problems. But the children can get distracted very easily, therefore, resulting in the possibility in Experiment 1.

To me, when i'm in a foul mood, i'll pop myself a bar of chocolate as chocolates really help in making my mood "sweeter". To teenagers like us, who likes to do homeworks? Not many. We would always wish for freedom and stuffs. But, doing homeworks are just a part of life that we have to undergo, and continue with our life. -How i wish i won't grow up and face the difficulties & realities of life. - From this article, i've learnt that music will affect a person's emotions and feelings.

Why would a chimpanzee attack a human?
earlier in the week, a pet chimpanzee left a woman in critical condition after attacking her mutilating her face and hands. the owner, who tried to stop the attack, was also injured in the process.

the chimpanzee, was shot and killed by police officers at the scene. it was a smart chimp, which appeared on tv commercials during such acts that a human does.

but, in 1996, the chimp might have bitten another woman.

the chimp was reported suffering from lyme disease, caused by a tick-borne bacterium and known to cause fatigue, joint problems and mental difficulties.

chimps in the wild are not used to people—they're afraid of them. So, really wild chimps don't attack people. But in captivity, they have learned in the meantime that they are stronger than humans.

the chimpanzees are way stronger than the humans. chimp are 5 times stronger than humans!!even a pro wrestler could not take down a adult male chimpanzee.

from this article, i learned that chimapnzees are not such a good pet to keep! they are dangerous animals! they are also such macho animals, so, next time when we see a chimpanzee, don anger them, if not we will become their punching bag!

Website: http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/40841/title/Two_satellites_collide_in_Earth_orbit Date of publication: Thursday, February 12th, 2009
Publication: Science News
Author: Ron Cowen

The article is about two satellites, a functioning device belonging to the US and a nonoperating Russian instrument, colliding with each other at Earth orbit about 800 kilometers over Siberia on February 10, creating a swarm of some 600 chunks of debris. The name of the U.S. satellite was an Iridium 33, a common telecommunications spacecraft and the Russian device was a Kosmos 2251. The crush destroyed both of the satellites, which had orbits about 90 degrees apart relative to Earth. However, this was not the only crush that had happened. For example, in 2005, a U.S. rocket body collided with the third stage of a Chinese launch vehicle. But there was something different about the two crushes. The one that is about a U.S. rocket body colliding with the Chinese launch vehicle only generate very little amount of debris while the most recent one generated a lot more debris. From the article, it can be pointed out that although satellites can help us with many things, these very satellites could also pose us with problems. Lets take the recent collide of the two satellites as examples. What if the impact of the colliding is so strong that some of the debris is somehow brought down to Earth due to Earth's gravity? And what if the incident of the colliding satellites cost some kind of nation disagreement that may lead to war? Therefore in the end, satellites may not be as helpful as one would think of it.
End of post .

The Science Of Sleep

We have to sleep because sleep plays a significant role in brain development. Lack of sleep has serious effects on one's brain ability to function. The after effects include grumpiness, grogginess, irritability and forgetfulness. One's concentration becomes more difficult and his/her attention span would shortens considerably. Sleep deprivation not only has a major impact on cognitive functioning but also on emotional and physical health. The much negative effects of insufficient sleep shows how important sleep is to our human body. Sleep occurs in a recurring cycle of 90 to 110 minutes and is divided into two categories: non-REM (which is further split into four stages) and REM sleep. I find this very interesting as it not only showed me the importance of sleeping, it also gave me a clearer view on sleeping. Sleeping is a thing we all do everyday but yet not many knew about what really is taking place when they're sleeping. The amount of sleep one needs varies and the world record for the longest period without sleep is 11days. I find it amazing for people to be able to stay up without sleep for days, with the deeper knowledge of side effects one would have after reading this article, i doubt one would want that to happen on themselves, so have sufficient sleep everyday!

  Multivitamins
MULTIVITAMINS

This article tells us about multivitamin mainly for postmenopausal woman. Evidence shows that diets full of vitamin-rich foods may protect against disease such as cancer and heart disease but multivitamins may not be a good substitute for gain of vitamins. The largest research done in the US about multivitamins states that it does not have the ability to prevent cancer, heart disease or other cardiovascular problems as the result shows that the number of multivitamins-users and nonusers who contacted such disease and at similar figure after 8 years.

Though ineffective, multivitamins are not at all useless as it can still be taken ‘as a form of insurance’ for people with poor eating habit. It is recommended to maintain a healthy weight with regular servings of fruits and vegetables while limiting red meats to prevent cancers and heart attack risks rather than consuming vitamins.

After reading this article, I felt that people have lost something to rely on for vitamins and especially for people with improper eating habits as it limits their consumption of vitamins. Multivitamins has been used as a ‘cancer prevention‘ pills for years and people have spent billions of dollar purchasing it and I find it a waste to spent money on such ineffective pills. People has been mislead to believing that consuming these pills will help in boosting of health but this article help wakes people up from their dreams about their assumption.

For myself, I’ve also lost my confident in using multivitamins and learnt that there is no alternative method for perfection. I will stay away from multivitamins as much as I could and maintain a healthy lifestyle to the best of my abilities without it.

Drastic diet may extend human life, study finds

Nov. 15, 2007
Special to World Science

From this article, I felt that there is a possibility that drastic diet may extend human life.

Though researchers knew it worked on animals, but whether we would get the benefits has been unclear.

Century by century, researchers from the olden days , have been crazy over finding a way to immortality . Yet it seems impossible and not a cure has been found , till now.

However, scientists have been researching on how to extend human life.

Till now, it seems possible that with drastic diet may extend human life with reliable studies of residents of the Japanese island of Okinawa, known through much of the last century both for exceptionally long-lived inhabitants and for very spare, though balanced diets. The investigators said they found evidence that the two things are at least partially related.

Animal tests have found that the extreme dieting of caloric restriction entails cutting some 40 percent of calories to get the strongest life-extending effects. Animals placed on such regimens live up to 40 percent longer than normal, as long as the diet remains nutritionally balanced. (Some scientists propose—again based mostly on animal tests—that taking a substance called resveratrol may replicate caloric restriction’s benefits, without the unpleasantness.)

Willcox and colleagues found that at least from the mid-20th century through the 1960s, the Okinawan diet was about 11 percent short of what would normally be recommended to maintain body weight. As of 1995, the average Okinawan lived about five years longer than the average American, and about 18 months more than the average Japanese.

The islanders’ spartan diets may have been a legacy of “periodic crop failures that occurred in Okinawa in the early 20th century and a long history of marginal food supply,” the researchers wrote.

With efficient evidence, there is a possibility that human life span can be increase.

I feel that this is definitely good news to the human lives as who wouldn’t want to live longer, with their loved ones? Who would not want to live longer and enjoy a pleasant life?

However, much further research needs to be done, in order to clarify the doubts.

  When dreams come true

This article tells us that you don’t just dream and forget everything the moment you wake up. Research has shown that dreams show what you think about in the future and the closest people in your life. Experiments show that dreams that we have affects our relationship with one another. Dreams are actually what are hidden within our lives which have not happened just yet. Some people dreams felt so realistic to them that they never thought that it was actually a dream. Many cultures in the past thought that dreams were related to souls.

I feel that this article has helped me understand more about dreams, as I often have weird dreams that I myself do not understand it. Some of what I dreamt has happened before and I felt it was like déjà vu. And I found something interesting which I never thought that people in the past would treat dreams as souls visiting them. So, dreams may really come true! :P

  Code Of The Common Cold
This article is about how the scientists have begun to solve some of the mysteries of the common cold and may lead to the development of the first effective treatments of the common cold.

Scientists solve some of the mysteries of the common cold by putting together the pieces of the genetic codes for all the known strains of the human rhinovirus. Till date, there has been no success in developing effective drugs to cure the common cold. People generally think of colds as a nuisance. However, they can trigger asthma attacks to people of any age. Recent studies also indicate that early rhinovirus infection in children can program their immune system to develop asthma by adolescence.

From this article, I have learnt that we are very close in getting the first effective treatments for the common cold. At the same time, this is very important as many people do not know the dangers of the common cold and treat it just as a plain nuisance. Therefore, we must be wary of what a cold can be cause and know the consequences that would be faced if we treat colds as a nuisance. Also, this article proves how efficient researchers and scientists are.

This article helps me to understand more about what the researchers had found out therefore I find it very interesting as it raises my curiosity. I feel that the findings are very important to every single one reading this article as it can prevent asthma attack from triggering if we take extra notice when down with common cold.

  the danger of stress!!!
Getting stressed isn't just a state of mind. It can also seriously harm the body.
poeple just think that getting loads of sleep, exercising regularly and try to avoid fried foods is the only thing to stay healthy.

But, they forget the most important thing of all, to relax!
As, stress has a bigger impact on the body than any other factors.
Stress, also cause our immune system to weaken. It causes the body to release pro-inflammatory cytokines, immune factors that initiate responses againist infections.
when the body produces this cytokines for a period of time, the body's ability to fight infections and wounds would decrease.
There would also be a increase of getting heart diseases, and other diseases.

this article helps me understand the importance of not getting too stressed up as the after effect of stress is so dangerous and harming! so, next time when i'm getting stressed up, i will tell myslef not to get too stress!!

it also teaches me that stress can cause such harm to our body that i did not know before. next time when you are feeling stress, read this post and you will not be stressed up anymore.

Have u notice that someone is particularly attractive? Why are some people more attractive than others? Everyone has different opinions about what attractiveness is about. There are some facial characteristics that people define attractiveness: averageness, symmetry and sexual dimorphism.

Averageness: averageness is about how unique and different is one's facial expression.

Symmetry: symmetrical features also defines facaial beauty. Just a slight mismatch and a face can look weird

Sexual dimorphism: sexual dimorphism characteristics. These are what makes a female look more like a female and a male more like a male. If one is more masculine it can make a big difference to someone who is less masculine.

In 2004, a study showed that being attractive( good symmetry and nice averageness facial expression) also means that he is healthy.

In 2007, there was a study that showed how a brain would respond to faces that were pretty neutral or ugly. It was showed that brains had strong responses to pretty faces and ugly faces, but showed less response to middle-of-the-road faces.

I have learnt a lot from just this article alone. Its shows that the attractive-looking people gets to gain more than those who are neutral-looking or ugly-looking people. I have learnt how to gauge someone's beauty and not to critisise them as everyone is unique

Website:http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/40713/title/Winter_birds_shift_north_ Date of publication: Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 Author: Susan Milius Source: Science News The article is about birds that needs to travel north to spend their winter are spending their winters farther north than they did 40 years ago and overall, the wintering grounds of the birds have shifted an average of 56 kilometers (35 miles) north in cold months. One of the reasons behind why the birds are traveling a longer distance could be due to the climate change or global warming. An example of one of the many species of bird is the Woodland birds, which has moved the most of an average distance of more than 113 kilometers towards the north. Another reason could be due to that trees are being cut down, which in the end, forces the birds to have no choice but to travel further to find their wintering grounds. I find that the article contains some very important information. One of these important is that it shows that global warming is not something of the future but instead, global warming is something that is happen here and now, which needs our attention. Also, the cutting down of trees tell us it maybe the reason why global warming is happening as with more trees cut down there will be lesser trees to absorb the carbon dioxide. Lastly, the trees that are being cut down may contain species of animal that are yet to be discovered, thus driving them in to extinction before them are named .   why do other people hear our voices differently than we do?
When we listen to a tape recording of ourselves talking with some friends,we insist the tape doesn't sound at all like our voice, but everyone else's sounds resonably accurate.

There is universal pattern of rejection of one's own voice.Speech begins at the larynx, where the vibration emanates.Part of the vibration is conducted through the air-that is what our friends heat when we speak.Another part of the vibration is direcetd through the fluids and solids of our heads. Our inner and middle ears are parts of caverns hollowed out by bone. The inner ear contains fluid, the middle ear contains air ,the two press against each other.

Actually ,when we speak ,we are not hearing our voice solely with our ears, but also through internal hearing ,a mostly liquid transmission through the body organs.

From this articles, it explains the reasons clearly, i realise why we always hear our voices differently in the tape.I think that listening to a recording of our voice is like listening a symphony on a bad transistor radio, since the sound is recognisable but a pale imitation. For understanding more about the article ,i also have to learn about the structure of our ears and larynx. This is a small matter in our daily life ,but i believe that not many people find this questioan and get the answer for it ,most of us are not care about it ,i have to pay more attention on the things arrounding us in the future.I think this article is very imortant to us.

This report tells us that an explosion of DNA duplication in the common ancestor of humans, chimpanzees and gorillas may be responsible for many of the differences among the species. Even though it happened long long time ago, the effect is still visible now. Scientists found out that the DNA of human and apes are quite similar, only different arrangement and the number is different, but different from other breeds like gorillas, orang-utans and chimpanzees, so it is highly likely that humans are from apes. The cells passed on to humans let us have flexibility to adaptation to new environment, making us not feeling uncomfortable when going to a new environment. Also, other DNA and cells are also passed on to humans like diseases, mental problems and autism. Researchers also found out that most duplication occurred next to more ancient duplications, causing cells to copy and rearrange, and leading the cells in the apes to change and resulting in a different form and behaviour. Even though humans are from apes, some of the cells found in human can only be found in humans, with some with unknown effects, maybe that is why every human is unique in their own way and look different from apes and from each other.

I think this article is interesting as it tells us about our origins and tell us who we really are. If we do not know who we are, then what is the point of us living on the surface of Earth???… …But thinking back, since we are already alive, we might as well live life to the fullest. I don’t mean we don’t deserve to live but I mean at least we know where we came from right??? Hope you get what I mean. Even though this might be interesting and there is a need for us to know, I thing all these are not important anymore. We are the way we are now, whether we like it or not, this is life, this is fate, whether we know these or not, it doesn’t change anything, all these is just the past and it might not even be truth in the first place, even though it may be scientifically proven, instead of bothering, researching about the past, why not think ahead and plan for the future??? The past may be important as it made us what we are today, but without a present or a future, there wouldn’t be a past, the past is already gone, there is no way we can do to make it come back, despite how good or bad it may be, all we can do is to accept things the way they are and we can only hope for the future to be better and be a great past for us to remember. So, we should not be bothered if we were apes in the ancient times and what will happen to us in the future but instead, think for the present and future and make it the best by making use of the lessons learnt and the mistakes we made in history. As long as we believe in ourselves, we too, can create our own destiny. ENJOY THE PRESENT AND BEST OF LUCK IN THE FUTURE :)

LOVE, HONG XIANG ( 28 )

Can you catch up on lost sleep?
This article is about not getting enough sleep, having what you call "sleep debt" when you want to catch up on lost sleep, and on how to solve the problem.

Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. Tacking on an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up. For the chronically sleep deprived, take it easy for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern.

To catch up on lost sleep, go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning with no alarm clock. You may find yourself catatonic in the beginning of the recovery cycle, but as the days pass, the amount of time sleeping will gradually decrease.

After reading this article, i have learnt more about how to catch up on lost sleep and i find it very useful to me as i had always been sleep-deprived. I have also learnt that sleep deprivation leads to foggy brain, worsened vision, impaired driving, and trouble remembering. Long-term effects even include obesity, insulin resistance, and heart disease!

CLONING

My article is about Dolly the sheep which was clone on 5th of July 1996 but sadly died six years after which was on 14th of Feb 2003.
Dolly was publicly significant as the genetic material from only one adult cell can grow into an entire new organism and before that demostration,
there were no prove that differentiated animal cells can give rise to entire new organisms. and so Dolly was famous.

Due to wanting to master cloning,
there were numerous attempts but many failures, which caused this animals to die in such a short while.

I have learnt more about cloning although i feel sad for those animals,
but you will never know unless you try and try hard enough, and maybe they can succeed in human cloning

Salt Secrets

This article is about the food that we taste contains a lot more salt than what we realize and it will cause harm to our health. We can’t even taste the salt sometimes as more than 75 percent of the salt we eat, is hidden. -omg- Not even the adults, salt is also starting to affect kids.

Salt is made up of 2 basic components, sodium and chlorine. It’s the sodium that cause the troubles as we only need about 500 milligrams of sodium to keep our muscles working and our nerves to send messages throughout the body. Too much sodium causes the heart to work extra hard to produce more blood and this leads to a rise in blood pressure, resulting heart diseases.

This article is very useful to me as i have learnt much information about how salt that we use in daily lives could actually affects us so much. It also tells us about what other reasons that can lead to heart diseases for example, eating junk food and drinking soft drinks. This article helps me to know more about what is hypertension.  And, it contains information about obesity. -that's what we, the girls, cares most- woohoo. or is it only me? opps. Cut down on salt, it harms! and of course junk food and fast food. =)

  Liar Liar Pants On Fire!

All of us have lied at least once in our lives. Whether it’s a small, insignificant lie or a big whopping, fat lie. The great American observer Mark Twain, once wrote “Everybody lies ... every day, every hour, awake, asleep, in his dreams, in his joy, in his mourning. If he keeps his tongue still his hands, his feet, his eyes, his attitude will convey deception."

Lying comes from deep within us. Its our second nature. Lying is also a skill we use with wild abandon. Some people can lie well but some just suck at lying. Research has shown that both men and women lie with equal frequency. But women lie to make someone feel good. And men lie to make THEMSELVES look better.

Lying does not only include verbally. Other forms of lying include using make up, makeup, hairpieces, cosmetic surgery, clothing and other forms of adornment to disguise our true appearance. Even simple actions like crying crocodile tears and faking smiles are also considered as lying! Cool huh.

So the most important thing is :”WHY do we lie?”. Its very simple really, *drumrolls* we lie just because it works. Yes, its that simple. As homo-sapiens (humans lah), we must fit into a tight knitted society to succeed. so instinctively, our top priority is to help ourselves. If lying helps us, why not? Plus, lying is built into our body. We just lie instinctively! So you cant really blame us for lying.

I find this article to be a really interesting read as lying is a very common thing that we all can relate to. It also make good conversation topic as nobody will expect you to suddenly ask ‘do you know why we lie?’ I myself have of course lied one too many times. Its good to know that its not that I have been “bad” but I lie because it helps me. I have no idea before reading this article that lying is natural born. I have always thought that lying was learnt through years of experience! I was also shocked to find out that lies do not just include verbally. But putting on make up or spraying de-odorant is also considered as lying! That really came as a shock to me. So far this article has been a very eye-opening read for me. And I wont feel so bad about lying too. :D

  my article

http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/40442/title/FOR_KIDS_Science_loses_out_when_ice_caps_melt

This article is tells us that Earth is melting faster. Most of Earth's glaciers have been shrinking for decades as our climate has been warming from natural causes and human activity. Not everywhere on earth is melting fast. At the higher topical areas, like mountain tops, they have been warming at three times the speed of increasing ground level. One example of melting glacier is one that sits on top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It has been melting steadily for nearly 100 years and has lost 84 percent of its ice. Scientists collects ice core from mountains before they melts. These ice core can tell them about the role that climate played in the rise and fall of cultures throughout history. Lonnie Thompson, a glaciologist, believes that the history preserved in the ice cores may also help foretell Earth’s future climate. For example, data from the glaciers offers clues as to how past temperature changes affected El Niños, the atmospheric-oceanic disturbances that hit the central West Pacific every few years.

I think that this article can tell people about how bad the world is warming at. Most of the warming is cause by human activities, and if we reduce these harmful human activities, the world will not warm at a faster speed, and the Earth can survive longer. This article also interests me a lot as I can understand more about what is happening on Earth.
